Sometimes you want to be filled. Or you’re looking for something to fill a friend. But where do you start? What material do you get? How big is too big and what’s the difference between a dildo and a dong anyway?
You know it’s a dildo because it has a D at one end and the ball(s) at the other
All About the Base
To put it simply, a dildo has a flared base, sometimes with a suction cup for attachment to your surface or harness of choice. Sometimes the base looks like a set of testicles for a more realistic look, but the point of a base to stop the dildo disappearing up inside of you if you use it for anal. As one of our suppliers likes to say ‘You know it’s a dildo because it has a D at one end and the ball(s) at the other’. Or maybe that should be an O-dli-D?
Having said that most of us use the terms interchangeably. So, if you’re buying something for your (or someone else’s) backdoor, just look for the flared base. You may also want to check out our Guide to Anal Play if you’re just getting started.
Material Matters
Anything that’s going into your body needs to be body-safe, so glass, medical-grade silicone and metals are all great choices – but they’re often the more expensive. Cheaper alternatives like Jelly, TPR/TPE and PVC can be porous, and sometimes have a tacky, sticky feel after use. They do have a softer feel though, and are often easier on your bank balance. If you’re buying one of these, we recommend cleaning both before and after use with an anti-bacterial toy cleaner and always use a condom during play. You can also check out our Guide to Toy Materials for more information.
Top Tip
Keep a close eye on ‘real feel’ branded materials. Some manufacturers trademark a cheaper material with a name that incorporates a more premium material – like ‘Silicone’. Just because it’s got ‘Silicone’ in the material brand name with a TM after it doesn’t mean it’s actually high grade, non-porous silicone. If the only material listed comes with a trademark TM or a registered trademark ® symbol, you can probably assume it’s a cheaper jelly or TPE product, and decide accordingly.
Budget friendly silicone and a flared base? Exactly why we love it. This dildo is versatile enough to work for any body, long enough to hit all the right spots without causing discomfort, and narrow enough for easy insertion without stretching you uncomfortably. In our opinion, this is one of the best small dildos out there.
Yes it’s ours, yes it’s a perfect size for most users, yes we’re going to make desire puns. More importantly, we control the quality, design and manufacturing of the Desire, so we know it’s a great product that’s safe for your body. It’s a fantastic classic for your collection and perfect for when you Desire something that feels a bit bigger, but won’t break the bank. Or you.
We told you there were going to be puns.
Tempered glass has a number of benefits when it comes to dildos. It’s super hard, hypoallergenic, and is ideal for temperature play – you can safely heat glass toys in warm water or cool them in the fridge before use.
The Pipedream 8.25” Textured Glass Dildo has that realistic textural sculpt for that extra sensation and has a great heft, so you really feel its weight during play. It’s also about as big as you’re going to want unless you like them extra-large. We also know at least one person in the office who shows off the hand-blown glass piece as a decorative ornament, but we’re not naming any names here…
If you still want the chonk but would like a little flex and give, grab yourself the best-selling Thick Realistic 8” Dildo with Suction base by NSNovelties. With 8 inches of insertable length and 2.1 inch diameter (that’s 6.5 inches around), this big dildo will give you the stretch you want with the slight give of firm, satin-smooth silicone.
So… yeah, this dong is one that gets used a lot for anal play, and while it doesn’t have a flared base, it’s rather long and the only way you’re losing this one inside of you is if you try really, really, hard. And no, that’s not a challenge. Please don’t do it.
But if you’re wanting to experience some double penetration fun, or have a friend you want to play with, this double ender is for you. Its heads are of different sizes so it’s perfect to ease yourself—or someone else—into the pleasures of penetration.
Note: We recommend condoms when using this toy. Especially if you’re planning on sharing this with anyone who isn’t a committed play partner. PVC can be porous, and you don’t want your toy absorbing anything that isn’t yours. And maybe not even then.
Okay, yes, there are bigger dildos and we are trying to get the Moby back in stock soon (Moby Dick, geddit?), but The Great American challenge is a classic for a reason and it’s one of the largest dildos you actually have a chance of getting inside of you. With nearly a foot of insertable length and a 9 inch (23 cm) girth, this is a challenge for a reason and you should absolutely be liberal in your use of water-based lube and allow plenty of playtime if you’re going to attempt it.
Also, please don’t send us evidence of your accomplishments. We’re not giving out prizes for this one.
For those who want the look and feel of a real man, the Pipedream King Cock series is made of firm but yielding real-feel material and hand crafted to get all the fine detail just right. They come in multiple skin tones and sizes
One of the things about dildos is that they don’t cum, so you don’t get the feeling of your partner filling you up. Literally. Unless of course, you get a squirting dildo. This one by Doc Johnson has the same realistic look you get in the King Cock, as well as a suction base, but it’ll fill you up just right.
If you’re looking to use the squirting function, we recommend keeping these just for personal use though. We don’t recommend sharing PVC toys unless you’re going to use a condom, and using one of those with a squirting dildo kind of defeats the purpose. Maybe just don’t share it around.
Keeping Things Clean
Dildos and dongs go into some of our most intimate places, and we recommend cleaning with anti-bacterial toy cleaner after use as a minimum. Simply spray the cleaner onto the toy and wash gently in warm water. If you’re keeping your glass, metal or silicone toys out for display, or find your TPE or Jelly toys are a bit dusty or tacky to touch when you pull them out of storage, you can always give them a quick clean before use. That way you can play with peace of mind and really enjoy yourself.
And that’s it – our top picks for Dildos and Dongs in 2022! If you’re after something a bit different please check out our on-site range. We bring in a wide array of products all the time and some of the very best products haven’t made this guide because they keep selling out and we can’t guarantee they’ll be around by the time you read this.
While you’re at it, don’t forget to grab your essentials. You don’t want to run out of lube halfway through a play session!
Happy playtime and much love from Dildo Daddy and the Wild Secrets team.
